We as CA's(SA ) lead in many different areas from business to the broader society and some of us also in Government. It then stands to reason that our membership organization, SAICA , has to be a leading professional member organisation. Our strategic focus has been and continues to be in areas of Growth in the accountancy profession, Brand Excellence, Member Satisfaction and Delight, Leadership and our People.

Midway through our second term as a Council, it is appropriate to reflect and to look forward. Our events ranging from business breakfasts, information sessions, an under-40 and a women's networking event as well as an annual dinner attracted over members during the last year...

The Southern Region Council is supported by committee substructures e.g. Members in Business Forum, Small & Medium Practices Committee, Public Sector Committee, Transformation Committee, Tax Committee, Trainee Committee, Senior Partners Forum, Sustainability Discussion Forum, Trainee Accountants Society (TAS) and the new established Under 40 and Strategic Management Forums.

Under 40 Forum

CA(SA) members under the age of 40 form the biggest constituency within SAICA, 3 965 members in the Southern Region. Understanding and delivering on the needs of this constituency has been identified as a key enabler to SAICA's future success and ability to grow the value proposition to this constituency.

SMP Committee

MiB Forum

This forum seeks to identify, discuss and facilitate the resolution of issues of national interest and importance to its members and represents members from various sectors within commerce and industry. One of the forums key focus areas for the future is the analysis of member information obtained from the SAICA segmentation exercise.

Tax Committee

This committee builds and maintains a good professional relationship with SARS Western Cape and Provincial Treasury. Quarterly stakeholder meetings are held with SARS on operational issues; as well as SARS managers annually attending a dedicated Tax Committee meeting.

Public Sector Committee

This committee's role is to influence public sector stakeholders in the region, and nationally, in order to heighten accountability in South Africa's public sector and to enhance professional public sector competency among SAICA members.

Trainee Accountants Society (TAS)

SAICA is committed to facilitating the sustainability and growth of the CA profession. As part of its initiatives in this regard, SAICA decided in December 2010 to create a Southern Region Trainee Committee. The SRTC has been hard at work during its first year of inception and the following projects are being worked on...

In celebration

Sophia Jenni, Southern Region Membership Administrator, celebrated 25 years of service in August. Sophia fondly remembers recording member and trainee information - first by hand and then typewriter - on membership cards. This process has evolved and is now fully electronic.

Mike Carney who retired as the Secretary of the Cape Society of Chartered Accountants in 1995 after 20 years of service, passed away on 12 May 2011. An extract from the April 1975 edition South African Chartered Accountant (now known as ASA)...
