  1. What is SAICA Australia?

    The SAICA Australia Members Association is a non-profit making organisation, affiliated to the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA).

    The primary purpose of SAICA Australia is to formally represent the Australian membership base and communicate the needs of the members to SAICA in South Africa.

    The key areas of focus of SAICA Australia include:

    • Communication of the needs of absentee members (members overseas) to SAICA;
    • Promoting and educating the Australian market about the CA(SA) brand;
    • Promoting the SAICA charity Thuthuka;
    • Facilitating access to continuing professional development;
    • Arranging formal and informal networking functions; and
    • Keeping members informed on global and regional developments of matters directly related to their profession.

  2. What CPD Support do SAICA Members have in Australia?

    In respect of CPD, the SAICA Australia Committee intends meeting with the New Zealand (NZICA), Australian (ICAA), England & Wales (ICAEW) and any other locally based institutes in order to secure positions for our members on their courses, discounts etc.

    If there is any further information that you require, please contact us.

    However, keep an eye out for emails being sent out from SAICA News that will provide further information at a later date of any further locally based CPD Courses and opportunities. These e-mails will be send to you if you have changed your country to Australia under your current details.

  3. Will CPD training in Australia be valid for SAICA CPD Hours?

    Pierre de Villiers (SAICA Australian Charter) is responsible for the CPD policy enforcement and monitoring side of things. From a policy perspective all CPD activities that members attend in Australia will be valid for SAICA CPD purposes and members can log these activities on the online recording system.

  4. Can I sign off accounts in Australia?

    In order to sign off accounts in Australia, as you would in South Africa as a Registered Accountant and Auditor, you will have to be affiliated to and properly registered with the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia (ICAA). Note that SAICA members arriving in Australia can access the ICAA's services as if they were a member, for a period of 1 year.

    SAICA has reciprocal agreements in place with various accounting bodies in different countries globally, for example: the Institute of Chartered Accountants England and Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, Canada, etc.

    Typically, you will have to satisfy certain requirements to become a member of the ICAA and open a tax and/or accounting practice. These requirements include but are not limited to: being a member in good standing at your institute of origin; retaining your membership of the institute of origin; writing and passing a conversion examination at an accredited Australian educational institution and/or relevant exams required by Australian Tax office.

    Current members of the Global Accounting Alliance (GAA) partners are exempt from this requirement, unless they are Principals in a public accounting firm or undertake work that requires a statutory registration. These members will have to complete this additional study so they can obtain a Certificate of Public Practice. Refer to https://www.charteredaccountants.com.au/A117137154 for more details.

  5. Are there meeting other than in Sydney for SAICA members in Australia?

    Initially, we will only arrange events in Sydney. However, once the committee in the Australia gets more established and the demand increases beyond Sydney we may then be able to arrange events outside of Sydney.

    However, should you be interested in arranging events within your area and know of a large local SAICA membership base, let us know and we can look at partnering in the future to arrange such events.

  6. How do I know what functions and events are being planned in Australia?

    Keep an eye on the SAICA Australia website and look out for email notifications.

  7. How can I join the SAICA Australia Committee?

    The current committee consists of 7 members who will stand for re-election on an annual basis. This is a voluntary committee which has other demanding work commitments to deal with on a daily basis.

    Therefore the committee welcomes and encourages any SAICA members that would like to get involved directly or directly in the committee. Direct involvement would include working on any sub committee that may arise from time to time. Indirect involvement would include sharing ideas, and providing introductions for future events.
